Survey: Over Half of Moroccan Women Experience Domestic Violence

It’s a frightening figure. More than 50% (actually 54%!) of Moroccan women have been victims, at least once in their lives, of a form of violence from their spouse.
These are official figures that have just been revealed by the second National Survey on the Prevalence of Violence against Women presented yesterday in Rabat. We learn that 55.8% of women in urban areas have been victims of violence, while in rural areas this rate exceeds 50% (51.6% exactly).
This survey, carried out between January 2 and March 10 last, targeted the whole of Morocco since, according to the Minister of Family, Bassima Hakkaoui, it concerned the 12 regions of the kingdom.
The results of this survey show that the most vulnerable age groups are women aged 25 to 29 (59.8%) and that violence in the marital context represents the highest prevalence rate. Thus, 54.4% of fiancées and 52.5% of married women have been victims of violence at the national level.
In public places, the survey shows that 12.4% of Moroccan women aged 18 to 64 have been victims of violence. Within education, 24.5% have reported being confronted with violence, this rate rising to 21.6% in urban areas.
