Survey: 43% of Moroccans See Anti-Black Discrimination as Problem

The Arab Barometer conducted a study on Moroccans’ perception of racism in their country. What do they think about it?
Conducted with 23,000 participants from October 2021 to July 2022 in 10 countries in the MENA region, the Arab Barometer survey systematically examines for the first time "the extent to which citizens of the region perceive racial discrimination and anti-black discrimination as a problem in their country." It reveals that nearly a third of Moroccan citizens have been "the target of racist comments at least once."
43% of Moroccans think that anti-black discrimination is a problem, compared to 37% who said that racial discrimination is more problematic, the study specifies. According to 40% of Moroccans, racial discrimination against sub-Saharan migrants is a problem to a large or moderate extent, with Morocco being their gateway to Europe. According to the Arab Barometer, the kingdom had 700,000 sub-Saharan migrants in 2021.
With 9% against 10% for Sudan, Morocco had the second highest rate of reporting cases of racism. However, the authors of the report note a particularly interesting fact: there are very few cases where citizens in Morocco and other MENA countries have reported anti-black or racial discrimination to any authority.
