Survey: Half of Moroccans Experience Violence, Women More Affected

The HCP has just published a report on the various forms of domestic violence suffered by women and men in Morocco. This survey mainly aims to understand this scourge in all its forms and contexts.
In 2019, about 50% of the Moroccan population aged between 15 and 74 were victims of at least one act of violence. The women who suffered violence that year were 57% compared to 42% of men, the High Commission for Planning said in its report. Although violence is suffered by both sexes, it is more recurrent in women. But in both cases, the marital context is the primary space where acts of violence are perpetrated, the HCP said, specifying that 53% of the violence endured by women and 39% by men is committed by the spouse.
As for the form, psychological violence dominates with 54% of all violence suffered by women and 73% of violence against men. However, women are the most exposed to this violence in all areas of life and in all forms. Proof of this, the difference in the prevalence rates of violence suffered by women and men is 13 percentage points in the economic sphere, 12 points for sexual violence, 10 points for psychological violence and 2 points for physical violence.
In the marital context, this difference is 16 points, 11 points in educational and training institutions, 7 points in the family, 3 points in public places and 1 point in the professional context. Furthermore, the domestic violence suffered by men is 94% psychological. While the psychological form is in the lead in all areas of life, economic violence comes second for women, while physical violence comes second for men.
Sexual violence accounts for 21% of the violence suffered by women in the workplace, compared to 2% for men. The share of violence in educational and training institutions is 37% for women and 14% for men, while violence in public places is 42% for women, compared to 8% for men, the HCP report pointed out.
