Surgeon Faces Prison for Alleged Negligence in Police Chief’s Death

Prosecuted for failure to assist a person in danger and involuntary manslaughter, the doctor of a private clinic in Beni Mellal was referred to the Attorney General at the court of first instance.
The practitioner, an orthopedic surgeon, is the subject of a complaint for negligence filed by the brother of a police chief, victim of a road accident in Kasbat Tadla.
Admitted to the Beni Mellal hospital, following serious injuries, the victim was taken to a private clinic in the city, where he underwent a surgical operation for a double fracture of the foot, according to the first diagnosis of the doctor.
A few days later, the commissioner had a respiratory crisis requiring his admission to intensive care. Despite the brother’s agreement, the medical care provided and the guarantee check presented, the doctor refused to admit the patient to the intensive care unit, on the pretext that the overnight stay in the service was too expensive, around 5,000 dirhams.
Transferred to the hospital, at the request of the orthopedist, the emergency physician confirmed the clinical death. For the victim’s brother, the doctor of the clinic is guilty of negligence and failure to assist a person in danger, knowing that the deceased suffered from injuries to the chest and head.
