Surge in Cyberattacks Targets Moroccan Politicians' Social Media Ahead of Elections

For several months, the hacking of social media accounts of Moroccan politicians has been increasing. Parliamentarians and politicians fear the sabotage of election campaigns as the next elections approach.

Through published messages, the parliamentarians confirmed the increase in hacking of their accounts in recent weeks, reports the daily Assabah. It is a global phenomenon and fought by all countries, says the newspaper, citing countries like France, Russia, Germany and the United States, which had sounded the alarm on the resurgence of this practice in the last three years.

These cyberattacks are often the work of the mafia and specialized networks, at the service of regimes seeking to modify the balance of power in their favor at each electoral deadline, or a global event. According to some sources, even if the hackers sometimes engage in this game to hurt the feelings of Moroccans, the security services fear that these attacks are organized by certain parties who do not have Morocco’s best interests at heart.

Moroccan parliamentarians and politicians, surprised by this first and its magnitude, are rather more fearful, their social media accounts being full of private discussions and confidential documents related to elections, as well as other current affairs.

While some countries do not accuse any nation or organization, others see countries like Iran, Russia or North Korea behind these acts of electronic terrorism targeting the political class.
