Supermarket Security Guard Sentenced for Sexual Harassment of Coworkers

The Nîmes criminal court sentenced a Moroccan, employed as a security guard in a supermarket, to 12 months in prison with a suspended sentence for acts of sexual harassment on female colleagues.
According to the plaintiffs, the Moroccan would have made vulgar remarks and invited them to get closer to him sexually or maritally. Touching was also mentioned. Facing President Brice Barbier, the forty-year-old said he had not "realized the extent of his remarks, otherwise he would have stopped immediately." He also expressed deep regret. The acts of harassment for which he was accused took place from January 2018 to July 2019.
During the appearance of the defendant, one of the plaintiffs confided that she had no intention of filing a complaint against the Moroccan because he was a good security guard and a good family man. However, she said she was disappointed when she had initially asked her employer to take action. Finally, the general management was solicited, she said. As for the second of the three civil parties, she confirmed her accusations of sexual harassment at the bar.
In his pleading, the Moroccan’s lawyer, Françoise Delrana, highlighted a cultural gap. The verdict is in: the defendant was sentenced to 12 months in prison with a suspended sentence.
