Suicide Rate Rises in Chefchaouen: Man Found Hanging at Mosque Entrance

The users of a mosque in the Achchafra douar in the province of Chefchaouen are in a state of shock, following the discovery at the entrance of this place of worship, of a man hanging. Another suicide that occurs a few days after the suicide, under the same conditions, of a mother of five children.
Just for this year, the city of Chefchaouen has already recorded ten suicides. In other cities in the region, a person commits suicide almost every week. The man who committed suicide last week, aged 42, was found hanging from an olive tree at the entrance to the mosque, reports the daily Assabah, which points out that the victim left no written trace to explain his gesture.
Alerted, the elements of the royal gendarmerie of the city of Chefchaouen and the local authorities went to the scene. After the usual finding, the body of the victim was transferred to the morgue for an autopsy, in order to determine the circumstances of this suicide. The phenomenon has taken on a large scale in the region, posing a real puzzle for the authorities who are trying to discover the reasons that push fathers, mothers of families, and even teenagers to this extreme act. The investigation opened to determine the circumstances of the suicide, a few days ago, of a mother of five children, is still ongoing.
If in 2021, more than a dozen people have voluntarily ended their lives in the region, during the year 2019, almost thirty suicides were recorded there. According to the daily Assabah, studies by civil society and some experts believe that the alarming rate of suicide in the region is due to the decline of the cannabis culture. Many have not withstood the psychological burden of the current economic crisis.
