Study Reveals Alarming Rise in Hate Speech at Moroccan Universities

The Mediterranean Youth Forum in Morocco and the Council of Europe conducted a study that revealed that hate speech is gaining ground in Moroccan universities and that it is urgent to find a solution, at the risk of seeing the situation deteriorate further.
According to the daily Assabah, student movements are the most exposed to hatred (42%). They are followed by homosexuals (39.2%), religious groups (31.4%), women (30.2%) and men (18%).
These speeches manifest themselves on the occasion of celebrations of the anniversaries of one of the student movements (37%), the exam period (26%), the start of the academic year (22%). These indicators drop significantly during the month of Ramadan at 8% and during religious holidays at less than 7%, reports the daily.
The study also revealed that 41.4% of the students surveyed fully support the idea that "people are free to express their ideas without hindrance", 7.2% are against it and 21.4% are neutral.
Ibn Zohr University in Agadir is at the top of the spaces where hate speech is most pronounced. This is explained by the fact that there are many ethnicities and nationalities present. In second place is Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech.
Finally, the study considers that hate speech is "a kind of evacuation of societal frustrations and that the university is a space of freedom that leads to vertical and horizontal confrontations that also extend outside the walls of university institutions".
