Study Reveals Alarming Acceptance of Violence Against Women Among Young Moroccans

The majority of young Moroccans believe that violence against women is "normal". This is revealed by a study commissioned by Oxfam Morocco.
Entitled "Violence against women in Morocco: between patriarchy and institutional limits", this study caricatures the domination of men over women in Moroccan society. Indeed, the majority of young Moroccans support the view that violence against women is a "normal" practice.
Five out of 10 men aged 18 to 35 surveyed in this study say that "men have the right to control the way their wives dress, considering this act as the husband’s responsibility towards his wife". It is therefore clear that sexist stereotypes and gender-based discrimination continue to have a strong hold.
Unfortunately, the modernization of Moroccan society has not contributed to a paradigm shift, the study summarizes. Based on this rather unsightly observation, OXFAM Morocco calls on the one hand for the parliament to legislate in favor of the fight against violence against women and on the other hand for the government to ensure their implementation after promulgation.
