Study: Over 1 Million Moroccan Families at High Risk of COVID-19 Exposure Due to Housing Conditions

In total, 1.05 million Moroccan families are exposed to the coronavirus due to the cramped living space and unsanitary conditions in which they live. This is revealed by a recent study by the High Commission for Planning (HCP).
According to the HCP, 33% of these families live in slums, 20% in unsanitary housing, 17.2% in the old medinas and 12.5% in social and economic housing. This population is mostly concentrated in the major cities of the country, the same source specifies.
Casablanca is at the top of the list of cities with the highest concentration of unsanitary or overcrowded housing, with a rate of 14.5%, followed by Fez (13%), Tangier (12.5%), Salé and Meknes (10% each), Rabat (9.3%) and Marrakech (9%).
At the regional level, the Oriental region is in the lead with a rate of 14.1% in terms of unsanitary, cramped and overcrowded housing. It is followed by the regions of Casablanca-Settat (14%), Fès-Meknès (13.1%), Rabat-Salé-Kenitra (13%)...
Based on the figures provided daily by the Ministry of Health, the HCP indicates that 86% of people affected by covid-19 in Morocco are in the 5 regions where unsanitary and overcrowded housing persists.
