In Morocco, one woman in three is a victim of sexual harassment on social networks, compared to 4.3% for men, reveals a recent study on the use of social networks, conducted by the Moroccan Center for Citizenship.

In detail, 32.7% of respondents say they have been victims of insults and defamation on social networks, 27.5% of hate speech because of their personal opinions, 19.7% of hacking of their personal accounts, 10.5% of cyberbullying, 9.1% of blackmail, 8.0% of sexual harassment and 7.8% of defamation. On the other hand, 45.2% of respondents say they have not suffered any form of harassment on these online media, according to the study.

94.6% of the survey sample believe that Moroccan families are not able to prevent the dangers to which their children are exposed when using social networks, stressing the urgent need to strengthen the legal framework to effectively combat defamation and slander on social networks.

Also, 95.8% of the respondents support the idea that TikTok is the platform that corrupts youth and undermines the moral values of society. For other respondents, the other platforms such as Snapchat (52.3%), Instagram (50.3%), Facebook (39.7%), YouTube (31.6%), Telegram (9.8%), Twitter (8.4%) and LinkedIn (5.0%) also contribute, to a lesser extent, to this social decline.

While 81.3% of respondents support the idea of restricting access to social networks and harmful content, 87.7% are in favor of blocking access to pornographic websites, the study also reveals, following a broad debate on social networks on the line not to be crossed between freedom of expression and defamation, as well as the harmful effects of these platforms on minors.
