Study: Nearly Half of Moroccans Face Mental Health Challenges

According to a recent study published by the Economic, Social and Environmental Council, 48.9% of Moroccans suffer from mental illness.

The study carried out on the sidelines of World Mental Health Day, celebrated on October 10, had the theme "mental health at the national level" and made it possible to investigate the causes of the phenomenon of suicide and the identification of mechanisms to address it.

The objective is to identify the main imbalances that need to be remedied in the field of mental health policy, the management of mental and psychological disorders and the prevention of suicide, it is specified.

According to the results of the survey carried out among a population aged 15 and over, 48.9% of Moroccans suffer or have already suffered from a mental disorder at some point. These results also highlight a worrying lack of care. The study indeed noted a significant deficit in the number of human resources (454 psychiatrists) and hospital beds (2,431 beds), which denotes the low investment of the State in the psychological care system.

Furthermore, the council also points out flaws in the legal framework and judicial expertise in the field of mental and psychological illnesses. Added to this are the difficulties related to the judicial placement of people suffering from mental disorders in care institutions.
