Study: 79% of Moroccan Women Face Public Harassment, Workplace Abuse Persists

In Morocco, women continue to be victims of harassment in the workplace and in public spaces, and of violence. This is revealed by the study conducted by the Arab Barometer, the results of which were published on Friday.
According to 79% of respondents, Moroccan women still suffer harassment in public spaces, and 65% say they continue to be harassed in the workplace, the study details, stressing that women also continue to be victims of violence. According to the study, only 13% of respondents noted an increase in violence against women in 2023, while 40% believe it has decreased during the period and 32% say the number of cases of gender-based violence has remained stable.
For 79% of respondents, women must have the right to refuse an arranged marriage without their consent. The study also reveals a notable decline in equal opportunities between men and women in the world of work, citing the main obstacles to women’s entry into the labor market, including the lack of employment opportunities (17%), low wages (14%), prejudices (13%) and the lack of childcare options (12%).
73% of those surveyed believe that the presence of women in the executive offices of political parties contributes to strengthening their rights and increasing their participation in decision-making. 71% of respondents are in favor of increasing the seats allocated to women in Parliament and the government. Similarly, 73% of respondents believe that democracy remains the best system of governance.
