Study: Domestic Violence Costs Moroccan Households Nearly 2 Billion Dirhams

1.98 billion dirhams (MMDH). This is the amount that some victims of domestic violence in Morocco would have spent. These are the results of a study conducted by the High Commission for Planning (HCP).
Entitled "Economic Cost of Violence Against Girls and Women: Household Expenses and Loss of Income", the note published by the HPC is based on data provided by a national survey conducted in 2019 with the support of UN WOMEN in Morocco. According to this study, "households affected by violence would have borne 1.98 MMDH, of which 1.3 MMDH in urban areas and 681 million dirhams (MDH) in rural areas", reports Maroc Diplomatique.
The amount spent on physical violence is significantly higher than that of other forms of violence. It is estimated at 1.67 MMDH against 308 MDH for sexual violence. The note points out that these are on the one hand, expenses incurred for health care (737 MDH), for recourse to legal and judicial services (406.8 MDH), and on the other hand for accommodation following the abandonment of the home (293.1 MDH), the replacement and repair of damaged property with 11.3% (185 MDH).
In addition to these costs, there is what the HCP calls the indirect cost of domestic violence, estimated at 351 MDH. This refers to the care of domestic work, paid work and/or schooling.
