Stray Dog Packs Spark Safety Concerns in Moroccan City of Salé

The phenomenon of stray dogs is reaching alarming proportions in Salé, causing concern among the city’s residents who also denounce the inaction of the authorities in the face of this scourge.
The proliferation of stray dogs is increasingly worrying the residents of Salé who claim to no longer feel safe in the face of the permanent risks of attacks by these animals and the contraction of diseases such as rabies, reports Al Akhbar.
These stray dogs, not sterilized and not vaccinated, continue to move in packs on the beach, around residential areas in the Marina or near the tram stations, disrupting the peace of residents and vacationers. To get rid of these invasive animals, some residents do not hesitate to throw poisoned food in the trash, thus causing the death of dozens of dogs in the street.
Several civil society associations have called on the competent authorities to take firm measures to end the proliferation of stray dogs. They are notably asking for vaccines against rabies to be made available to the hospital, and for a large-scale campaign of sterilization, vaccination and collection of stray dogs that threaten the health and safety of the city’s inhabitants.
"The municipality is trying to fight this scourge with the necessary seriousness. An agreement has also been reached with the Animal Protection Association, knowing that the results will only be visible in the long term and not immediately," said the deputy mayor of Salé, stressing the need to census the stray dogs to put an end to their multiplication in Salé, as well as in all the cities of the kingdom.
