Stranded Moroccans in Saudi Arabia Plead for Repatriation Amid COVID-19 Crisis

Many Moroccans, stranded in Saudi Arabia due to border closures and the lockdown imposed because of covid-19, are asking to be repatriated.

"It’s really a shame. Some of us don’t even have food to eat. Help us get home for God’s sake." A Moroccan stranded in Saudi Arabia cries out in distress. In a video, he claims that he and other Moroccans in the same situation are unemployed due to covid-19, reports Morocco World News.

"You know how expensive life is here. If you don’t have money to buy water, you’ll die of thirst because the drinking water here is not good. You have to buy bottled water to drink," he says. In addition to daily expenses, he points out that there are rent and electricity bills. "How can we cover these costs when we have been suspended from work for almost two months now?" he laments.

"There are people living with their families without any support," he continues. Comparing the financial assistance granted to families and salaried workers on leave in Morocco and Saudi Arabia, he believes that the situation is much better in his country of origin. In Saudi Arabia, "things are different...", he declares.

"Whenever I ask questions about our situation, they tell me that our country doesn’t want us. It’s a shame," he laments. "I’ve stopped asking so I don’t hear the same answer. It’s a shame." Faced with this desperate situation, he calls on the Moroccan government to organize the repatriation of all unemployed Moroccans stranded abroad.
