US State Department Praises Morocco’s Counterterrorism Strategy in 2020 Report

The United States has congratulated Morocco on its counterterrorism policy, hailing the good bilateral cooperation in this area.
In its 2020 terrorism report, the US State Department states that "the Moroccan government has continued its comprehensive strategy, which includes vigilant security measures, regional and international cooperation, and policies to counter radicalization," adding that "in 2020, Morocco’s counterterrorism efforts have largely mitigated the risk of terrorist acts."
In detail, the report highlights that last year, Morocco succeeded in neutralizing at least 35 individuals and dismantling seven terrorist cells that were planning to attack various targets, including public buildings, personalities and tourist sites, noting that no terrorist incident was reported in Morocco in 2020.
Similarly, US diplomacy welcomed the work of Moroccan airport authorities who have "excellent capacity to detect fraudulent documents." Capabilities acquired during a series of US-sponsored programs to improve technical and investigative capabilities, including financial investigations, intelligence analysis and cybersecurity, it notes.
Regarding violent extremism, the United States has praised Morocco’s establishment of "a comprehensive strategy in this area, which prioritizes economic and human development in addition to the fight against radicalization and control of the religious sphere." The kingdom is cited in particular as a "major ally" outside NATO and a member of the Trans-Sahara Counterterrorism Partnership (TSCTP).
