Spanish Senate Rejects Vox Proposal to Include Ceuta and Melilla in NATO Protection

The Spanish Senate on Thursday rejected the proposal by the Vox party to amend Article 6 of the North Atlantic Treaty to explicitly include the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla under NATO protection.
Senators, with the exception of those from the Popular Party (PP) group, preferred to remain under the "political will" of the allies in the event of an attack on the two autonomous cities. Yolanda Merelo, the Vox senator, recalled that this proposal came after the massive influx of migrants, including minors, into Ceuta in May last year, causing a migration crisis between Spain and Morocco.

This crisis was "another example of Morocco’s attempt to conquer Ceuta and Melilla," insists the senator of the far-right party, who stresses that Morocco’s ambitions are still present and that a new attack on the two cities can occur at any time. She also criticized the government for not taking Moroccan threats seriously and for reducing its military budget.

"The Sanchez government allocates 10 billion euros to Defense, Morocco allocates 15. We are heading towards a national security problem," criticized Merelo during the budget debate. And she added: "The security of a nation like Spain cannot depend, on the one hand, on the will of a bunch of communists and separatists, and on the other hand, on the will of the allies."
