Spanish ports to the rescue of Moroccan ports

Morocco’s foreign trade is experiencing an unprecedented logistical crisis at the beginning of 2026. Hit by poor weather conditions in the first quarter and the military escalation in the Middle East, the Kingdom’s main ports are facing massive congestion that is paralyzing imports and disrupting delivery schedules.

According to testimonies collected by Hespress, hundreds of importers are experiencing delays of several months. Faced with the lack of local storage space and the overcrowding of unloading circuits in Casablanca and Tanger Med, many container ships are forced to turn back to temporarily store their cargoes in the neighboring Spanish ports.

This near-general disorganization directly threatens the commercial dynamics of the summer season. Goods shipped in January are now expected only in May, thus blocking packaging and distribution operations. Professionals fear heavy financial losses if they are forced to postpone the sale of their products until next summer.

To relieve this pressure, experts in the sector recommend accelerating the commissioning of the Nador West Med port, activating the Atlantic project in Kenitra and better exploiting the infrastructure in Agadir. To these purely logistical challenges is added the anxiety related to the conflict in the Middle East, whose prolongation is exploding insurance costs, modifying global shipping routes and multiplying delay penalties for Moroccan operators.
