Spanish Opposition Urges Government to Pressure Morocco on Melilla Border Reopening

The general coordinator of the Popular Party (PP), Elías Bendodo, has asked the President of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, to do everything possible with Morocco so that the commercial customs of Melilla, unilaterally closed by the kingdom since August 1, 2018, are reopened.
During a visit to the autonomous city on Friday, Elías Bendodo (of Moroccan origin) launched this appeal to the Spanish government, also asking it to strengthen security at the borders of Ceuta and Melilla with Morocco by deploying more agents from the state security forces and bodies.
The PP leader also asked Pedro Sanchez to reprimand former socialist minister María Antonia Trujillo for recently describing Ceuta and Melilla as "vestiges of the past." The two cities "are as Spanish as Malaga, Granada, Madrid and Toledo, there is no doubt about that. It is an insult for a socialist to come and question that," he criticized.
Bendodo did not fail to deplore the economic slowdown in Melilla, citing as an example the deterioration of air and maritime transport quality with the peninsula and the paralysis of several important projects, including the extension of the commercial port, the cruise ship quay or the University. Problems that, according to him, are due to poor governance of the city.
