Spanish Opposition Demands PM Sánchez Explain Shift on Western Sahara Autonomy

The Popular Party (PP) demands the appearance of Pedro Sánchez in Congress to explain the basis of the decision to support the autonomy plan for the Sahara proposed by Morocco.

The PP deputies have requested that the head of the Spanish Executive appear before Congress to explain the letter sent to King Mohammed VI in which he supports the autonomy plan for the Sahara, which he considers the "most serious, realistic and credible solution for resolving the dispute" over the Sahara.

The right-wing party blames the government for changing its position on such a fundamental issue as the Sahara, without informing the main opposition party and other parties in the presidential majority such as Podemos, which has also denounced this decision, according to Diario Critico.

This reversal of position tarnishes Spain’s image abroad, adds the party, which wants to know the content of the letter sent to the Moroccan monarch. That is why the party is demanding Sanchez’s appearance, demanding that the government show "seriousness and prudence in everything concerning Spain’s foreign policy".

The PP deputies also intend to ask Sanchez whether he has informed Algeria of this decision, which could have repercussions on Spain’s regular gas supply.
