Spanish onion at 8 DH arrives in Morocco: Why our farmers are no longer a match!

The Spanish onion is imposing itself on Moroccan stalls in the face of the surge in local prices. Despite reservations about its quality, this imported product seduces consumers with its price, which is halved in the midst of a national seasonal shortage.

The financial argument now takes precedence in the markets of the Kingdom. While the domestic onion sells for about 18 dirhams per kilogram, the imported product from Spain is priced between 8 and 10 dirhams. This attractive rate massively guides the choice of buyers, who favor economy over what is sometimes considered a lesser quality.

This dominance of the Iberian supply is explained by seasonal factors. The end of the harvest of the "karkoub" onion, a very popular local variety, has caused a sharp drop in Moroccan supply. "This shortage is temporary. We will have to wait until the summer for the supply to normalize," explains Abdelkassem, a merchant at the Agadir market.

Several Spanish varieties (white, red or copper) are now available to make up for this lack. However, some vendors note that prolonged transport and refrigeration can alter their taste and freshness. Despite these doubts about the taste, the priority of Moroccan consumers remains the most affordable option on the stalls.
