Spanish Defense Minister Affirms Melilla’s Status as Spanish Territory During Visit

The Spanish Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, reaffirmed her country’s position regarding the city of Melilla, stating during a visit on Wednesday that this territory belongs to Spain.
This trip by the Spanish official is part of the presentation of New Year’s wishes to Spanish soldiers, but also to "learn more about the different land units located in the autonomous city, where more than 3,000 soldiers serve," says a statement from the department, quoted by El Faro.
Margarita Robles visited the general command and the "Alfonso XIII" base, accompanied by the Chief of the Spanish Army Staff (JEME), General Amador Enseñat. A ceremony honoring soldiers who died in 2022 was organized.
Speaking on the occasion, Margarita Robles reiterated the "Spanishness" of the enclave, declaring before the military that: "Melilla is history, culture and a crossroads of civilizations, but above all, Melilla is this Spain that is improving every day, that has strength and courage." And she added: "Being in Melilla, in this Spain that is ours, that we love, admire and learn from its history, is a source of satisfaction."
These remarks were supported by the general commander of the city, Luis Saez Rocandio, who stated that "last year, the city of Melilla celebrated its 525th anniversary as a Spanish city."
