Spanish Activist Confronts Far-Right Leader Over Domestic Violence Remarks

From her seat at the head of the El Amal association, Nadia El Othmani devotes her life to defending women victims of domestic violence in Spain. Her strong reaction to the spokesperson of the Spanish far-right party, VOX, did not escape the media.

On the occasion of the exchange meeting organized by the city of Madrid, which coincides with the World Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the MRE protested against the racist remarks of the far-right leader, Javier Ortega Smith, who tried to exploit the issue of women victims of violence and underage immigrants in his election campaign.

"I ask you to have respect for the women who died from domestic violence and to stop exploiting them for political purposes," the activist said. This did not prevent her from apologizing, as she explained to the newspaper El Diario.

She specified that the objective of her association is to support women victims of domestic violence and to ensure the protection of orphans in Madrid as well as in other Spanish cities.

The idea of fighting for women’s rights is not a coincidence, she added, since in trying to defend her sister against the attacks of her brother-in-law, the latter had condemned her to a wheelchair since 1997, by shooting her twice, one of which hit the spinal cord.
