Spain Unveils New Security Strategy, Emphasizing Cooperation with Morocco

In its new national security strategy, Spain sees its relations with Morocco based on "good friendship", "respect for borders" and "loyal cooperation".
Spain adopted on Tuesday its new national security strategy, taking into account the geopolitical context, the impact of the health crisis and Morocco’s hybrid strategy. In this document, the Spanish Executive indicates that its priority is to "promote a space of security, political stability and development and contribute to addressing threats such as terrorism or organized crime" in the Maghreb, in a collaborative approach with "partner and friendly countries of Spain" such as Morocco and Algeria.

"Spain’s relationship with Morocco and Algeria is a relationship of good friendship, based on loyal cooperation and mutual respect for borders," the document states, which has planned a comprehensive security plan for Ceuta and Melilla, "due to their geographical proximity to Morocco and their status as Spanish and European borders".
The document also addresses other aspects such as climate change, cybersecurity, defense, migration flows or relations with Europe and the rest of the world. It supports greater involvement of Spain in NATO, whose next summit scheduled for June will be held in Madrid, and insists on the need to have a substantial military budget to ensure the protection of territorial integrity and the security of populations.
