Spain Surges to Second in EU Migrant Expulsions, Trailing Only France

According to data published on Tuesday by Eurostat, the Spanish authorities issued a total of 14,545 expulsion orders in the second quarter of 2025, compared to 34,760 for France, number 1 in terms of expulsion orders. Germany comes in third with 14,095 orders. Regarding returns, France is still in the lead with 3,685 people sent back, followed by Germany (3,445) and Sweden (2,865), reports El Dia.

The majority of irregular migrants who were the subject of an expulsion order from an EU country during the period were of Algerian (9,805), Moroccan (7,085) and Turkish (6,310) nationality. Regarding returns, the majority were Georgian (2,460), Turkish (2,020) and Albanian (1,945) nationals. In the EU in general, the return of migrants increased by 12.7% in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the same period the previous year, with 28,355 people sent back.

In total, 116,495 third-country nationals were the subject of a return decision from an EU member state, an increase of 3.6% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. From one year to the next, the number of return decisions decreased by 6.3% and the number of returns decreased by 0.8%.
