Spain snatches a (future great) player from Morocco
The 18-year-old midfielder Thiago Pitarch, who started for the first time with Real Madrid against Getafe, has chosen to wear the colors of Spain. The Moroccan Federation suffers a setback despite its efforts to convince him.
After two appearances in the Champions League against Benfica, Thiago Pitarch has taken a major step at the Santiago Bernabéu. Although the Whites lost (1-0) against Getafe, the young talent seduced the Madrid supporters with his vision of the game and his technical ease for his first start.
This precocious talent was at the heart of an intense sporting battle. The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) had recently approached the player’s father to activate his dual nationality. The organization hoped to attract the midfielder to the Atlas Lions to strengthen its squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Unlike his teammate Brahim Diaz, who opted for Morocco, Pitarch has decided to remain loyal to his country of birth. The player, already a regular in the Spanish youth teams under 19 and 20, now awaits his official debut with the Roja first team to definitively seal his international future.
This decision secures the future of Spain in midfield but leaves a bitter taste on the Moroccan side. Although Pitarch has not yet earned a senior call-up, his firm commitment to the Spanish national team puts an end to speculation about a possible change of sporting nationality in the short term. However, Morocco has not yet had its last word...
