Spain Prepares for Massive Summer Migration Operation at Key Ports

The preparations for the Operation Crossing the Strait (OPE) have been launched by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, which expects a significant flow of passengers and vehicles between June 15 and September 15. The ports of Algeciras and Tarifa will play a central role in this operation.

This Friday, the Secretary of State for the Interior, Isabel Goicoechea, and the Director General of Civil Protection and Emergencies, Leandro Marcos, participated in the meeting of the State Coordination and Management Committee for this operation.

This is the first preparatory meeting for the operation, which will be followed next week by the meeting of the Spanish-Moroccan joint commission in Madrid, according to information provided by the Ministry of the Interior.

Operation Crossing the Strait in Spain, Marhaba or Transit in Morocco

Since 1986, the Operation Crossing the Strait has been implemented to manage the flow of travelers of Maghrebi origin traveling from various European countries to North Africa during the summer period.

As in previous years, this operation will involve a system including fleet plans, provincial coordination plans and road safety measures, in collaboration with the participating ports, particularly Algeciras and Tarifa.

The meeting brought together representatives of the relevant government delegations, the National Security Department, the General Directorates of Road Traffic, Merchant Navy, Public Health, the Civil Guard, the National Police, State Ports, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the State Meteorological Agency.
