Spain Grants Asylum to Moroccan Transgender Individuals and Rif Activists

The Spanish government accepted 55 asylum applications from Moroccans in 2018. The vast majority of these accepted applications concerned Hirak activists from the Rif and transgender individuals.

At a time when Chakib Lafrid has just declared that he wants to settle in Spain in order to enjoy unconditional freedom there, we learn from Spanish media sources that 55 asylum applications filed by Moroccans were accepted in 2018 by the Iberian authorities. Most of them would be transgender people and activists from the Rif.

According to new figures published on Thursday by the Spanish newspaper El Pais, Moroccans would be among the main asylum seekers in the last two years. The newspaper explains that most of them do so because of their sexual orientation or their activism.

On the other hand, 595 asylum applications would have been rejected the same year. But these 55 accepted applications nevertheless contradict the statements of the Spanish Secretary of State for Immigration who had previously stated that Moroccan citizens were not among the people to whom Spain offered asylum because Morocco is "a safe country". A policy apparently shared by several European countries, including Germany.
