Spain’s Diesel Exports to Morocco Hit 161,000 Tonnes as Imports Fall to Zero
Diesel trade between Morocco and Spain took a dramatic turn in August 2026. While Moroccan deliveries to the Spanish market disappeared from the statistics, Spanish sales to the kingdom surged 94% in a month.

Zero tonnes one way, 161,000 the other. The latest Spanish oil statistics reveal a striking contrast in diesel trade between Morocco and Spain. In August, Madrid recorded no imports of diesel from the kingdom, while its own exports to Morocco reached their highest monthly level since January.
According to figures from Spanish agency CORES, reported on 23 October by El Debate, Moroccan deliveries had already plunged in July, to just 7,000 tonnes. Just a few weeks earlier, they had still stood at 74,000 tonnes in May and 53,000 in June.

The shift is all the more surprising given that Morocco exported 222,000 tonnes of diesel to Spain between January and July, already exceeding the total for all of 2025. This is unusual trade for a country without an operational refinery since the shutdown of the Samir refinery in Mohammedia.
Morocco becomes Spain’s top diesel customer
In the other direction, trade is following the opposite course. Spanish diesel exports to Morocco rose from 83,000 tonnes in July to 161,000 tonnes in August, an increase of 78,000 tonnes in a month.
The kingdom thus accounted for 24.2% of all the diesel Spain exported that month. It was well ahead of France, which received 108,000 tonnes, and Portugal, with 94,000 tonnes.
The trend extends beyond diesel alone. Including gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas, kerosene and other petroleum products, Spanish deliveries to Morocco reached 271,000 tonnes in August, compared with 180,000 in July.
At that volume, Morocco also became the leading foreign market for Spanish petroleum products in August, ahead of France and Portugal.
