Spain and Morocco Set to Restore Diplomatic Ties After Months-Long Crisis

Spain and Morocco are working to resume their diplomatic relations, after four months of crisis caused by the arrival in Spain of the leader of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali. In this context, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, had a first telephone exchange with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita.
The Spanish and Moroccan Foreign Ministers spoke by telephone on Wednesday and agreed to meet very soon. Minister Albares, present at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, was unable to meet physically with Nasser Bourita who remained in Morocco due to the ongoing formation of a new government, reports El Correo.

This virtual meeting marks an important step in the resumption of diplomatic relations, pending the official visit of Minister Albares to Morocco and the holding of the high-level meeting.
Minister Albares stated in mid-July, upon taking office, that he will work to "strengthen relations with Morocco, a great friend and partner". The ultimate goal for him, beyond the resumption of diplomatic relations, is to define new bases for cooperation.
