Spain and Morocco to Reopen Ceuta and Melilla Customs Posts After Years-Long Closure

After several years of closure, the customs offices of Ceuta and Melilla will reopen on January 23 next, a week before the holding of the high-level Morocco-Spain meeting, scheduled for February 1 and 2 in Rabat.
These customs posts have been closed since August 2018 for Melilla and since October 2019 for Ceuta, recalls El Pais. In line with the restoration of their relations, Morocco and Spain have managed to reach an agreement for their reopening.
In September 2022, in New York, Spanish Minister José Manuel Albares and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, "agreed to work so that the orderly and gradual passage of goods at the land customs posts begins in January."
This commercial blockade had moreover strongly impacted the already fragile economy of the two enclaves, the newspaper points out, reporting that "barring last-minute changes", the customs offices of Ceuta and Melilla will reopen on Wednesday, January 25.
