South Africa Official Confirms: Morocco Never Applied to Join BRICS

Morocco has never asked to join the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), confirmed an official at the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The director of the Middle East international affairs department at the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ashraf Suliman, clarified, in an interview with the Russian television channel Russia Today, that Morocco has never made a formal request to join the BRICS.
Diplomatic sources in Morocco cited in the press had indicated that no formal request had been made by the kingdom to join this group, recalls Le Desk. Suliman’s statement therefore confirms this information, at the same time refuting the allegations of the South African Foreign Minister, Naledi Pandorau, who had cited Morocco among the 23 countries that had expressed interest in joining the BRICS.
Algeria, which was part of this list, was not retained. The files of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, considered allies of Morocco, were however accepted. Finally, Argentina, Ethiopia and Iran officially became members of the BRICS, at the end of the last Summit of the group held from August 22 to 24 in Johannesburg.
