Soaring Sheep Prices Threaten Eid al-Adha Celebrations in Morocco

In Morocco, the rise in sheep prices raises concerns about the actual holding of Eid al-Adha this year.
Sheep prices for the sacrifice have reached an unprecedented high for the past three years. This year, they have increased by about 1,000 dirhams compared to 2023, and 2,000 dirhams compared to 2022, confides a merchant to Aljarida24.
Thus, the sheep that were sold for 4,000 dirhams last year, cost more than 5,000 dirhams this year, laments the merchant who recalls that the sheep imported from Spain and neighboring countries thanks to state subsidies did not contribute to lowering prices last year.
Faced with this continuous rise in prices, many Moroccans are calling for the cancellation of Eid el Kebir this year.
