Soaring Meat Prices Force Moroccan Families to Shift Diet Habits

Red meat has become a luxury for middle-income Moroccan households due to its high price. As an alternative, they have started prioritizing legumes and fish.

Middle-income Moroccan families can no longer afford to buy red meat, a product whose price has been rising continuously since the period preceding Eid al-Adha. This trend is causing concern among Moroccans who are questioning the reasons for this surge in red meat prices.

Currently, in the markets of Casablanca, the price per kilogram of veal meat varies between 100 and 110 dirhams. That of mutton meat is around 140 dirhams per kilogram. As for the prices of "kefta" and sausage, they fluctuate between 110 and 115 dirhams per kilogram, according to Kech24.

The soaring prices of red meat are worrying MP Mohamed Hichami of the Popular Movement parliamentary group, who has questioned the Ministry of Agriculture and Maritime Fisheries on this issue. In a written question, the MP asked the department led by Mohamed Sadiki to support the prices of livestock feed compounds in order to avoid the rise in prices of red meat and poultry.
