U.S. Shifts Allegiance: Morocco Emerges as More Reliable Partner Than Spain, Expert Says

Spanish political scientist Pedro Altamirano states that Morocco has become a reliable value for defense, "a faithful partner of the United States more reliable than Spain".
"The United States maintains relations with Spain due to the undisputed geostrategic value of the peninsula and the close cooperation with the Spanish navy, but hardly more," notes Spanish political scientist Pedro Altamirano in an article published on the Alerta digital website. He points to a "deficit of reliability" of Spain that has been accentuated since the arrival to power of Pedro Sanchez, "ally of totalitarian regimes, notably Venezuela and Algeria".
"After the US recognition of the Moroccanness of the Sahara in December 2020, Spain, in the hands of the Sanchez government supported by the extremists of Podemos, decides to take the opposite path by continuing to support the Polisario front, thus arousing the anger of the United States and Morocco," notes the expert, noting that the Iberian peninsula is already suffering the consequences of its misconduct. Pedro Altamirano cites as an example its exclusion from African Lion 2021.

The United States and NATO now have a distrust of Spain. This makes "a new major player emerge on the Canaries-Strait-Balearics axis who, in a short time, and with the help of the United States, has become a reliable value for defense, namely the Kingdom of Morocco, a faithful partner of the United States, and more reliable than Spain," analyzes the expert.
