Seychelles Seeks Prison Cooperation Agreement with Morocco

The Seychelles prison service has engaged in discussions with its Moroccan counterpart, with a view to signing a possible cooperation agreement.
The Seychelles is seeking a cooperation agreement with Morocco in the field of prison operations. In this sense, the Seychelles prison service has had discussions with its Moroccan counterpart. It already has cooperation agreements with Mauritius and Tanzania. In addition to Morocco, the Seychelles is seeking to obtain a cooperation agreement with Israel. The two countries held a virtual meeting on August 30, 2022.
In a statement to Seychelles News Agency (SNA), the Director of the Seychelles Prison Service, Raymond St. Ange, said that the areas of cooperation under discussion are areas in which the local prison service needs to make improvements. He also stressed that during his visit to the headquarters of a prison in Israel, which took place in early 2020, he observed the in-depth knowledge held by the officers and the training program in place.
"The work there is intense, with officers encountering different situations on a daily basis and, as such, they have good experience and a sharp platform from which to operate. One of the things we lack here is a solid training ground. In many countries, they send their staff to a training prison, while in the Seychelles we only have one functioning prison. We have to approach things a little differently to ensure the safety of our staff, especially when in training," added the official.
