Severe Floods Wreak Havoc in Morocco's Drâa-Tafilalet Region, Disrupting Infrastructure

Torrential rains hit the Drâa-Tafilalet region on Friday, causing significant material damage and preventing traffic on several roads.

These violent storms have damaged several homes and caused power and communication outages in several douars. Videos showing the damage caused by these torrential rains have gone viral on social networks. On the images shared by internet users, we can see the valleys of M’Goun and Dadès, as well as the streets of Tinghir completely flooded. In Kelaa M’Gouna and the neighboring regions, the floods have led to power, drinking water and internet outages.

The region has been plunged into darkness since Friday. In collaboration with the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE), the local authorities are working to restore essential services. In the commune of Imilchil, significant material damage was also recorded after these violent storms accompanied by hail. Infrastructures, adobe houses and crops were destroyed. The province of Ouarzazate was not spared by these torrential rains that swept away crops and damaged infrastructure in the communes of Talwat and Ait Sedrate.

In the Ounila wadi, the floods led to the death of more than five thousand chickens in a poultry farm and damaged a bridge under construction, as well as roads and crops such as corn and olive trees. In addition, two women were reported missing in the Amassine douar, province of Ouarzazate, after the floods. On Saturday, the body of one of them was found by the rescue services. The search continues to find the second woman. Faced with the situation, the local authorities call on citizens to be cautious and stay away from flooded areas.
