Severe Flooding Disrupts Eastern Morocco, Submerges Oujda Airport

The torrential rains that hit the Oriental region have caused flooding in the cities of Oujda and the communes of Bni Drar, Ahfir and Berkane. The Oujda Angads airport was not spared.
Traffic on the national road connecting the cities of Oujda and Berkane, via Bni Drar, was cut off on Saturday due to the flow of runoff water. The area of Oujda Angads airport was also flooded. Deploring this situation that repeats itself every year, Salima Faraji, former deputy of the region, asked what measures the competent authorities plan to take to prevent flooding in these areas in the years to come.
"We know that the water floods the area between Oujda and the airport, and even that the National Airports Office had a difficult period last year due to the landing of a plane in an airport submerged by water. It would have been possible for the planes to land in Nador, for example. Moreover, last year’s rains endangered motorists, and that’s what happened today. Why then have the necessary measures not been taken to find solutions to evacuate this water?" Faraji wonders.
The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohamed Abdeljalil, had announced the launch of studies to prevent flooding at the level of airports. In addition, several flights had to be diverted to other airports due to unfavorable weather conditions in certain regions.
