Senegalese Woman’s Viral Tweet Exposes Housing Discrimination in Morocco
Sunday 28 July 2019, by
In Morocco, the tweet of a young Senegalese woman, victim of xenophobia, has become viral on the web. With 4,000 retweets, her testimony has sparked a wave of outrage over the discrimination suffered by many sub-Saharan nationals in the kingdom.
Sub-Saharans are unwanted in housing in Morocco. Adja, a Senegalese national, has had a terrible experience. From real estate agent to real estate agent, she toured a large number of apartments and buildings, as well as studios. Alas! Some Moroccans living in these dwellings do not want this kind of neighbor. At each visit to buildings, with a real estate agent, the young woman was a victim of xenophobic acts or remarks. Sometimes the complicity of the owners is used by the Moroccan residents of these dwellings to cancel the lease contract of the young sub-Saharan.
In addition to her tweet on these xenophobic acts, Adja published the recording of a telephone call with the owner of an apartment, who demanded only Moroccans.
Students who have experienced these acts in Morocco remember them and also recount their misadventures. Even appeals to the police are impossible. A sub-Saharan has experienced the bitter experience of this kind of behavior from real estate agencies. His many back and forth to the police were in vain. He had to finally give up. As for Adja, she continues to tour the buildings, in search of housing.
