Senegal Challenges Morocco African Title at CAS Tribunal

The verdict initially expected in July is being postponed. The Court of Arbitration for Sport, based in Lausanne, should hold the hearing dedicated to the dispute between Morocco and Senegal in September or October.

A decision therefore cannot be made before October at the earliest, according to information obtained by IUSPORT from a source close to one of the parties.

The CAS will have to confirm or cancel the decision rendered on March 17 by the African Football Confederation. The CAF had stripped the title from Senegal and awarded a 3-0 victory to Morocco.

Morocco’s Title Still Contested

The dispute dates back to the final during which the Senegalese team left the field during extra time to protest against a penalty awarded to the Lions of the Atlas.

The players then resumed the match. Morocco missed the penalty before conceding a goal, but the CAF considered that the interruption caused by Senegal constituted a breach of the competition regulations.

The Senegalese Football Federation strongly contested this sanction and seized the CAS to try to recover the trophy. It is requesting the cancellation of the result and recognition of the result obtained on the field.

Pending the ruling, Morocco remains officially African champion. This status remains, however, subject to the decision of the Lausanne arbitrators, who may confirm the Moroccan title or rule in favor of Senegal’s appeal.
