Senator Pushes for Official Status of Tamazight Language in Spanish Enclave Melilla

Compromís senator Carles Mulet, who visited Melilla in July after the migrant tragedy that occurred at the border with Morocco, expressed his wish to see Tamazight, one of the four most widely spoken Berber languages in Morocco, recognized as an official language in the autonomous city.
In six years, Carles Mulet has tabled more than 30,000 amendments and parliamentary questions to demand the revision of the law on democratic memory which, according to him, does not take into account the "cultural plurality" of the State. The hyperactive senator from Valencia is not making his first request for official recognition of Tamazight in Spain. According to him, "it is totally unfair and discriminatory" not to recognize this language and this culture that had been persecuted like many others.
Two years ago, Mulet had asked the government to "reformulate the objectives of the Cervantes Institute" to include Tamazight and Darija as non-official languages to be protected. In response, the Executive had stated that "the Institute had not scheduled any cultural events for the Tamazight of Ceuta and Melilla", assuring that it would continue to maintain "a fluid relationship with the General Directorate of Language Policy and Management of Multilingualism of the Generalitat of Valencia". Responses described as "hurtful" by the senator.
