UN Security Council Extends Western Sahara Mission, Recognizes Morocco’s Efforts

The United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) has just been extended for one year. This is the decision taken on Wednesday, October 30 by the Security Council. Indeed, it is through Resolution 2494 presented by the United States that the decision to "extend the mandate of MINURSO until October 31, 2020" was made.
In this new resolution, Morocco’s "serious and credible" efforts have been recognized by the executive body of the United Nations, which has also once again enshrined the pre-eminence of the autonomy initiative, presented by the Kingdom on April 11, 2007.
As for Algeria, the resolution indicated that it represents the "main party to the political process on the Sahara", calling on the parties to "compromise", for a "realistic, pragmatic and lasting political solution" to the Sahara issue.
The various countries involved in this regional conflict, (Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario) will have to engage again to "advance the political process under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General", recommended the UN Security Council.
