Sebta: Bourita assures Spain that Morocco was not behind the massive arrival of migrants

José Manuel Albares spoke again this Tuesday, September 8, about the exchanges he had with his Moroccan counterpart at the height of the crisis. Questioned on RTVE, he explained that he had called Nasser Bourita immediately after the start of the massive influx.

According to the Spanish minister, Bourita reportedly assured him that the Moroccan authorities were “of course not behind” these arrivals. He also reportedly told him that Morocco was immediately deploying the necessary resources to halt a flow that had become uncontrollable.

This version comes as a Spanish judicial investigation examines the possibility of an operation that could constitute a “hybrid war” and seeks to determine responsibility for the events of July 30 and 31.

Madrid says it still does not know who is behind it

Albares is more cautious about the exact origin of the crisis. According to him, the Spanish government is currently unable to “certify” who is behind the mass movement toward Sebta.

Madrid, however, says it identified unusual activity on social media in the days preceding the events, particularly on July 30. Messages had circulated the idea that the border could be crossed, notably following a distorted interpretation of a decision issued on July 8 by the Spanish Supreme Court.

For Albares, social media constituted the immediate trigger that drove thousands of people toward Sebta. He nevertheless recalled that several investigations remain open in order to establish precisely what happened.
