Saudi Arabia Backs Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for Western Sahara at UN Assembly

During the plenary session of the 76th UN General Assembly in New York, Abdallah Y. Al-Mouallimi, Permanent Representative of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations, reiterated his country’s support for Morocco’s efforts to find a realistic political solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia reiterates its support for the autonomy plan in the Moroccan Sahara, within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty and the unity of its national territory, as a solution in line with international law, the UN Charter, Security Council resolutions and the General Assembly," said the Saudi ambassador to the UN, recalling that this plan has been welcomed by the Security Council, through the resolutions that have been voted on since 2007.
Riyadh welcomes "the participation of the elected representatives of the Moroccan Sahara in the sessions of the C24 committee (Special Committee on Decolonization held in June in the presence, in particular, of the representative of the Polisario Front, and the members of the Special Committee on the question of Western Sahara, Editor’s note) and their participation in the two round tables in Geneva".
Reiterating its satisfaction after the holding of two "round tables with the participation of the Kingdom of Morocco alongside Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario", the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia called for "continuing in this direction in order to arrive at a solution that puts an end to this long-standing conflict," continued Abdallah Y. Al-Mouallimi.
Saudi Arabia also reiterated its support "for Morocco’s efforts to arrive at a solution to this regional conflict" and "its rejection of any attack on the supreme interests of the Kingdom, its sovereignty and its territorial integrity. In Riyadh’s eyes, the settlement of this conflict "will bring peace and stability to the Sahel region," added its representative to the UN.
