Sardine Prices Skyrocket in Morocco, Shocking Consumers and Straining Budgets

Sardine prices, also known as the "poor man’s fish", have seen a significant increase in the Al Hoceima region, reaching 50 dirhams per kilogram in some sales outlets.
Many families in the Al Hoceima region consume sardines, a highly prized fish during the summer. This year, the sharp rise in the price of the "poor man’s fish" is preventing the inhabitants of the region from stocking up on it.
According to the latter, the rise in sardine prices would be due to market speculation and the lack of price control and monitoring by the Ministry of Agriculture and Maritime Fisheries.
It is thus requested that the department led by Mohamed Sadiki take urgent measures to ensure the availability of sardines and seafood products at reasonable prices, adapted to their purchasing power.
