Russia Eyes Naval Base in Algeria Near Moroccan Border, Reports Suggest

Russia, a traditional ally of Algeria, is preparing to install a naval base in Oran, not far from the border with Morocco. This would allow the neighbor to the east to put pressure on Morocco or to have a protector.
With a view to installing a permanent base of the Russian naval forces in Oran, in the border region with Morocco, two Russian military delegations have visited Algeria in the last three months, reports Algérie Part. During their stay, the members of these delegations carefully inspected the naval base of Mers El-Kébir in the wilaya of Oran. No official source has, for the moment, confirmed this information.
The possible installation of a Russian naval base in Algeria is seen from two angles: a strategy of positioning Russia in strategic areas where the United States is present or a way of providing military protection to the Algerian generals. Vladimir Putin’s country is one of the most influential powers in the Central African Republic. The Russian naval forces are present in the Red Sea where they have set up a base in Sudan.
The same media also reports that Russian submarines could be stationed and then depart on operations at the level of the Algerian military installations. As a counterpart, Algeria could receive equipment for the maintenance of its own 6 submarines in service.
