Royal Air Maroc to Quadruple Fleet, Boost Tourism in $5.7 Billion Expansion Plan

The Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, and the Chairman and CEO of Royal Air Maroc (RAM), Hamid Addou, proceeded on Tuesday in Rabat to the signing of the 2023-2037 program contract. The objective is to improve the attractiveness of the Moroccan destination and strengthen the role of air transport in the economic and social development of the kingdom.

The signing of this program contract aims to support the government’s ambition to attract 65 million visitors by 2037. With this contract, the Moroccan state will strengthen its participation in the capital of the national airline, help implement its development plan and contribute to the digitalization and improvement of the quality of its services.

For its part, RAM will quadruple its aircraft fleet over the next fifteen years, reaching 200 aircraft compared to 50 currently. The company will also have to open new international routes to strengthen the links between Moroccans living abroad and the kingdom, as well as 46 new domestic routes to serve a set of regions in the kingdom.

As part of this contract, a Casablanca air hub will be developed to strengthen the presence of national and international air transport companies, and to position Mohammed V Airport as one of the three best in Africa in terms of traffic and connectivity. For years, the government has been focusing on the development and compliance with international standards of air traffic.

This program contract, which supports the 2023-2026 strategic roadmap for the tourism sector, will inject new momentum into the air transport sector and strengthen the role of the tourism sector in attracting investment, said Aziz Akhannouch during the signing ceremony. By 2026, Morocco aims to attract 17.5 million tourists, generate 120 billion dirhams in foreign exchange earnings and create 80,000 direct and 120,000 indirect jobs.
