Royal Air Maroc Cuts 140 Jobs, Including 65 Pilots, Amid COVID-19 Crisis

140 staff members, including 65 pilots, have been laid off. A second phase of economic layoffs is announced for the coming weeks, with millions of dirhams in severance pay for the pilots at the end.
This workforce reduction was the sine qua non condition for the company to benefit from the government’s aid plan. "(…) given the dizzying drop in demand and the company’s turnover due to the crisis related to the Covid-19 pandemic," confides an authorized source within RAM to TelQuel.
Thus, the national company, which is currently experiencing a 98% drop in turnover and is operating with less than 10% of its fleet, has decided to part with 30% of its fleet (20 aircraft out of 59).
365 million dirhams were disbursed by the company to compensate the 95 pilots affected by the voluntary departures and economic layoffs. Significant sums that are explained by the "very high" salaries of some pilots, according to a source within the company, TelQuel reports.
60 million dirhams were also disbursed for the 180 other members of the company affected by the voluntary departure plan and the economic layoff. A second wave of layoffs should take place in the coming weeks.
According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the return to normal air traffic activity worldwide is not expected to occur before 2024.
