Rooftop Palm Trees in Marrakech Spark Environmental Concerns

The city of Marrakech is famous for its majestic palm trees. But a new trend is worrying environmentalists: the planting of palm trees on the roofs of houses, hotels and public buildings.
This phenomenon has developed in reaction to ecological campaigns that advocate replacing street palm trees with more effective trees against pollution and offering more shade.
Visitors to Marrakech can observe this practice on many buildings, including luxury hotels like that of football star Cristiano Ronaldo, reports Rue20.
Environmentalists are alarmed by the consequences of this "palmerization of roofs," recalling that palm trees need to be rooted in the ground to develop properly and believe that this practice is detrimental to the aesthetics of the city.
However, experts claim that the palm trees used are a particular species, capable of withstanding difficult climatic conditions and surviving at height, without deep rooting.
